Improvisational jazz doesn’t usually sit well with me. Its unpredictability and lack of concrete structure stands counter to my subconsciously rigid definitions what music should sound like. Of course, inferring something as shortsightedly idiotic as the idea that great music should sound like anything is grounds for being burned at the stake, so I apologize for that. Luckily, in Rachel Brotman‘s debut EP, improvisational jazz is paired with her beautiful vocal caress tiptoeing along subtle, strangely riveting melodies. It brings the structure to the chaos that I love so much. And just like that, my preconceptions dissolve like salt in water. Anecdote attempts a fusion of sorts, and pulls it off rather well. While pieces like the title track and “Two Doves” are what I tend to think of as attention grabbers (due to an emphasis on their lovely melodies), the remainder of the EP sits in a somewhat experimental zone. The improvisational nature of “Clever” specifically sets the EP in a league of its own, but at the same time will likely turn off those listeners without the desire to dabble in the unfamiliar. While I don’t claim to know much about jazz or soul, I feel that Rachel’s exploratory mindset is what [...]

We’ve been featuring fewer and fewer electronic-based trip hop artists on BB lately, a fact that I’m confounded by. I don’t know if I’ve set the bar a bit too high, or if the genre simply doesn’t interest me as much as it used to. I’ve been reluctant to give a good hard listen to even Emancipator’s new effort, an artist that I revered so much that his music served as the first fodder for a (brief, and mostly terrible) feature. With that depressing notion out in the open, one record that I’ve found to re-excite my waning downtempo interest is none other than Ten Million Sounds’ Finding Time. Finding Time is a compilation that features a solid mishmash of downtempo, nu-jazz and trip-hop elements. It’s made up of offerings from beat makers hailing from a plethora of colorful backgrounds and locations – Los Angeles to Paris and everywhere in between. While the collection is relatively subdued and not exactly attention-grabbing, I find it to be a great accompaniment for my day to day patterns. Whether driving, working, or simply enjoying life, Finding Time fits the mood perfectly. The album is a wonderful background album, through and through, and I mean that in the [...]

Shakey Graves blazed onto the scene pretty quickly. While which scene he blazed onto remains up for interpretation, his presence online and in his hometown of Austin has made him into an “indie/folk hero” of sorts. But what draws me to his music is the exact opposite of what I spoke of in our most recent feature – just the right amount of character mixed with minimalistic production values. Armed with only an acoustic guitar, an antique amplifier, a small kick drum and his trusty vocals, the beauty of Shakey’s persona is his letting the music speak for itself. It’s as if he’s laying bare all of his flaws and daring us to take it as it is… a notion that is so contrary to what so much art has devolved into, that Shakey has become a sort of reawakening mechanism for me. Homemade, lo-fi recordings of his unmistakable croon matched with re-recordings of dynamic vocal harmonies make up the majority of Shakey Graves‘ most recent effort, the Donor Blues EP. His classic-in-the-making bluesy guitar work remains fresh over repeated listens, and is complemented extremely well by his upbeat, almost comical, lyrical demeanor. Shakey has a certain command of the English language [...]

Snappy, high-fidelity albums play just as important of a role in my ever-expanding music library as any intentionally lo-fi, bedroom-recorded material. Understanding the idea that there can be room for is both is difficult for some to grasp, including my stubborn self for quite some time. Overall though, nothing really compares to blasting a well-engineered masterpiece of production in the living room, on a solid set of bookshelf speakers; all-the-while enjoying a tall, velvety glass of malbec. Not that I know much about individual music producers or the engineers working behind the scenes. I would think that this is the point of a sparkling, pristine production – convincing the listener that the sound is as true-to-life as it can get, without making your presence known. In the case of Stellar Young, the smooth combination of the band’s technical, catch-driven post-pop-punk (is that even a genre?) and the album’s slick production values make Everything At Once simply too hard to put down after just one sitting. Match that with the fact that the band did it almost all by themselves, including raising funds through a successful Kickstarter campaign for a tour mini-bus, and you have one solid example of DIY determination at [...]

I’ll just get this out of the way now: I’m a sucker for subtle, unassuming indie-folk. Simplicity is an understated treasure in today’s complex indie music landscape, and its spoils are only available for those who make themselves aware of it. In my experience, getting into an album without much more than a guy and his guitar is quite easy, but appreciating it for what it is becomes the true test of will. Such a sensation was felt throughout my many repeated listens of yesper‘s most recent EP, cannibal king, and I must admit – this is one of the most engrossing, humbling, and hypnotic recordings I’ve ever had the pleasure of hearing. Where yesper excels is not in fabricating bombastic, hook-driven acoustic pop. This material reaches well beyond that designation, far away from the shallowness that plagues many artists that try their hand at the acoustic/vocal combo. In contrast, yesper takes a more introspective approach, focusing on the sense of space that causes you to close your eyes and feel the vibration of the guitar strings, hum along to his subtle vocal harmonies, and drink in the soft, vibrant atmospheres that each song brings into existence. The title track sounds unlike any other [...]

Talented musical duos and trios tend to instill a distinct notion of camaraderie in me for some reason. Bands greater than three tend to disorient me, not in terms of the music exactly, but more in terms of who does what. Done well, duos and trios can pull off the music I want to hear with the added bonus of conciseness and tangible character. Of course, such comments are only true if the music’s worth listening to, which I wasn’t sure about in my first introduction to Texan duo Team Tomb. Team Tomb plays a flavor of alt-rock that I haven’t chanced upon since the early 2000′s. Shoegaze-influenced garage rock is the best way I can further describe it, with heavy usage of electric guitar and vocal filters to deliver a distinct sense of space. Relatively repetitive rhythms and sleepy, seemingly lackadaisical vocal melodies actually help to define this record, rather than hinder it. The combination of these characteristics in this genre was always what made it interesting to me, however, and this is nonetheless apparent in Team Tomb‘s self-titled debut. Caleb (guitar/keyboard/lead vocals) and Benny’s (drums/keyboard/vocals) attention to detail is top-notch, even if it doesn’t quite seem there on [...]

We’ve been on a roll here lately with EPs that have proven their worth in salt, often standing up to the many full-lengths that we feature. We’ll add another to that list of beauties, with Roadkill Ghost Choir‘s latest alt-americana foray: Quiet Light. Perhaps it’s the brevity of these short efforts that makes them so appealing, leaving just enough room for proper rumination, and not enough for over-thought. Throughout Quiet Light, Andrew Shepard shows off his soft, entrancing vocal aptitude in a register that could be considered relatively high. His range is profound, however, as proof of the haunting lows in the opener “Beggars Guild” to the shimmering highs of “Tarot Youth“. Backup vocals also help to create a sense of space, an atmosphere that gives the record a character all its own. Folksy, americana instrumentals put the Roadkill Ghost Choir on a level with many of the top indie players of the moment. Plucky banjos, slide guitars and the mesmerizing oscillation of the organ breathe life into the album, but never sound shoehorned, never incorrectly placed. While, overall, the EP has a pretty cut-and-dry indie feel to it, there’s something more at work here. The movements, emotions and desires [...]

Gospel choirs are beginning to make for some completely original, addictively wholesome listening. While high-energy, organically-driven, gang-vocal folk-rock has become rather popular (thanks Mum&Sons), I’m of the opinion that the genre still has quite a bit of life left to it. Listen to Through the Deep, Dark Valley by The Oh Hellos, and you’ve got my reasons why I think so. Hailing from San Marco, Texas, siblings Tyler and Maggie Heath self-produced this gem with the help of their local church and other community musicians. Proclaiming it a self-contained concept album (*GASP!*), the band has crafted something strangely salutary and wholly self-sustaining. While the album’s not exactly for the faint of heart, it is one of the most enlightening full-lengths I’ve had the pleasure of discovering this year. It’s actually the perfect length, clocking in at around 40 minutes from end to end; and in all, is a strong, fiery march through the creative minds of the duo. Like many of the albums we’ve featured, TTDDV is meant to be experienced in one sitting, with each track listened to in succession. That’s not to say that individual songs aren’t worth cherry picking, but the album, as a whole, remains much [...]

photocomfort truly came out of nowhere. Unassuming indie folk/pop at its core, the far-too-short self-titled EP accomplishes a great deal within its rather limited time span. Simply put, it’s been one of the most pleasantly confounding introductions to an artist I’ve had in quite some time. It’s not everyday (month, or year for that matter) that an artist sends something over that makes you think, makes you feel, or reminds you that, yes, you’re alive in that little body of yours. On the one hand, I was immediately struck by the sheer grandeur of Justine Bowe’s seemingly small-scale effort. “Five measly songs?” I thought, “I’ll be done with those in a weekend. That feature will be written up in no time.” On the other hand, I was so irrevocably humbled by even thinking about putting finger to keyboard that… I simply couldn’t manage. Emotions were just so many, the words simply too few. So I gave the “five measly songs” another week. Then another. I quite possibly sat on this EP for two months listening almost every day. “How the hell does this thing keep me so interested?” I wondered day in and out. I’m still wondering why, and how she has managed [...]
